Oil & Gas Worm Gears

As one of North America's leading manufacturers of precision gears, at American Precision Gear Co., Inc., our capabilities can accommodate the requirements of some of the most demanding industries. From high precision micro gears for the medical industry to large scale industrial gears up to 44" in diameter, our capabilities are geared for virtually any gear manufacturing need.
We do considerable work for the machine tool and oil & gas industry; the project highlighted here is one that can commonly be found on our shop floor. This gear set is designed for use in oil extraction and is part of an oil rig component; it is a single lead, right-hand worm with 82 teeth, 10DP, and a 14.5° pressure angle. The worm gear was machined from SAE 85, C907 bronze, with an O.D. of 8.56". The worm is composed of 8620 cold forged steel, which we sourced. It has an overall length of 12" and a 1.75" O.D. Both components of the gear set required tolerances of +0.002"/-0.004".
Manufacturing of these gear sets required a number of machining processes, beginning with milling. This was done on our Fadal VMC-15xt CNC 4 axis mill; we also used a Jeil JDP-2 gear hobber equipped with a differential and radial infeed, and a CNC thread grinder. After machining, the gears were deburred on a Redin Model 10 deburring machine and then heat treated. All gear sets were subject to comprehensive visual and dimensional testing using our Micro Vu Excel visual comparator. They were also checked for run out, lead, and profile accuracy.
Our status as a one of the most trusted gear manufacturers is based not only on great pricing and fast lead times; it is derived from a deep commitment to quality. Our testing procedures are designed in line with all American Gear Manufacturers Association standards. We can also provide our customers with certificates of conformance reports (CoC), material certifications, and any other quality or verification documentation they require.
