Shaft Pinion Gears

At American Precision Gear Co., Inc., we specialize in manufacturing difficult to machine products, such as the hollow shaft pinion shown here. This project included a number of very challenging elements; to begin with, it is very small, it required very tight tolerances, and high volume production. Our ability to accommodate these requirements is unique in the industry; in fact, we are one of only a few US manufacturers who can produce this type of work.
This shaft pinion gear was designed for use in a high precision medical device and features 16 teeth, with a pitch of 96° and a 20° pressure angle. Composed of 303 stainless steel, it is only 0.550" (±.010") in length, with 0.188" O.D. (+.000 /-.002") and 0.070" O.D. (±.002"). Though these dimensions and tolerances are tight, we have the capability to reach even tighter tolerances, in some cases as close as ± 0.0005".
This project required the use of CNC screw machining and CNC gear cutting/hobbing; fortunately, our production facility is equipped with a large number of cutting-edge machining systems that are designed specifically for this type of work. In this project, we utilized a Star Swiss screw machine, a Monnier Zahner MZ-120 CNC hobber, and our Koepher KFS-100 CNC hob sharpener. We also used a Redin automatic gear deburring system, which provided the high precision required for this important step. Dimensional quality was verified through the use of a Micro-Vu 500 optical comparator. Following machining and dimensional qualification, all parts were subject to a thorough cleaning in our Crest OJC ultrasonic parts cleaner, followed by ASTM A-967 nitric acid passivation, then bagging and labeling.
This project represents volume of 90,000 parts per year, provided in batches of 7,500 per month. Delivery is based on a KanBan pull system, which the customer happily allowed because of our consistent 100% quality rating. To date, we have a record of production spanning 12 years with zero rejects. To achieve our quality system, we use tools such as very stringent SPC (statistical process control). We also provide the customer with detailed NCRs (non-conformance reports). In addition, all of our quality testing protocols is in full compliance with AGMA (American Gear Manufacturers Association) standards, and we provide full conformance documentation, including material certs and full CoC (certificate of conformance) reports.
